In a recent case-study assignment, a group of graduate students were asked to debate which company would most likely succeed long-term in a competitive marketplace—an organization rich in resources yet poor in aspirations or an organization rich in aspirations yet poor in resources.  There were great points brought up on both sides of why each company might outlast the other. In the end however, the class and the instructor agreed the company that was aspiration rich and resource poor would win out.  How can this be?  How can an organization that is far behind in resources win out? What does every company need in order to have a strong organizational culture? A deeply shared sense of purpose and a broadly shared dream. Without purpose, employees will show up to do a job but they will mostly be self-interested.
